Spring is lurking around the corner, and the weather here has already started dancing around the low 80’s, which is pretty rare. While the temps could still drop a bit before the season officially changes, garden planning is in full swing! And it’s a great time for anyone who may be interested in starting a garden this spring to start making plans for what you’d like to plant.
The main area of our garden is in four raised beds, each four feet by four feet. We use the square-foot gardening method, since this allows us to have a large variety of veggies and herbs in a small space. And when one square has finished giving up its produce, we can clear out the space and plant something else. This is a perfect method for someone new to gardening or for someone who doesn’t have a lot of space.

Mel Bartholemew’s book All New Square Foot Gardening is a helpful resource, and you could pick it up at your local library. Dividing the garden space up also makes it easy to plan and know exactly what I need to buy. The 4×4 size gives me easy access to everything that’s growing. Here’s what I’ll be planting in our raised beds this year:
Arug.= Arugula, Salad= Salad Greens, Eggp=Eggplant, Mari=Marigolds, Zin= Zinnias, Carr=Carrots, J.Pepp= Jalapeno Pepper
You’ll notice that the zucchini and squash take up a bit more space; I learned my lesson last season with giant zucchini plants taking over everything, so I’m going to give them room to breathe this year. Here’s a useful infographic to help you see how many plants can go in each square foot square:

I had no idea you could plant so many carrots in 1 square foot! I'm definitely trying that this season!
