DIY Outdoor Tic-Tac-Toe

Sharing is caring!

Looking for a way to add a fun game to your patio or porch area? Look no further than this cute DIY outdoor tic-tac-toe set. We made these out of Perler beads and a wood slice we had on hand. I had originally planned to put it on a stump in our yard, which would totally work, too! No stump or wood slice? No worried! Just paint a tic-tac-toe board on any outdoor, weather-resistant surface.

Why have games outdoors?

I know we’re always trying to encourage our kids to stay outside as much as possible, and having small games like this on hands is fun for everyone! Tic-tac-toe is typically played with paper and pencil, and these things can blow away so why not have an outdoor tic-tac-toe board ready for a game any time?

There are all kinds of fun outdoors games that have traditionally been used just indoors. We’ve been to several cookouts over the years that have had giant Jenga sets, large yard dice, and even a huge connect 4 game! So why not create your own DIY backyard game with things you may already have on hand. And this outdoor tic-tac-toe set is small, so it doesn’t require much storage, and we honestly leave our’s out in the weather, and we’ve had no issues!

Outdoor Tic-Tac-Toe Supplies

Once you’ve got all of your supplies together, you’re ready to put your outdoor tic-tac-toe board together!

How to create an outdoor tic-tac-toe board

  1. Begin by gathering all of your supplies, including pouring some perler beads into a small bowl for easy access.
  2. Use the beads and begin to create x’s and o’s out of beads. If your board is small, you may have to do this one at a time, but with a larger board, you can make multiple pieces at a time.

3. Once the perler beads are in place, cover with the ironing or wax paper, and iron according to the perler bead instructions, fusing the beads together. Allow the beads to cool before removing them from the board. (All of our boards were in the shape of animals, so we did one piece at a time.)

4. Be sure to create 5 x’s and 5 o’s for a complete tic-tac-toe set.

5. Once pieces have been made, place a small amount of black acrylic paint on a paper plate and grab a paint brush. On a wood slice or outdoor stump, paint your tic-tac-toe board. Use several coats if necessary.

6. Allow paint to dry, and if you’re planning to leave the set outside full time, then consider using a weather-proof sealer for longevity. And that’s it!

Enjoy your outdoor tic-tac-toe set with friends and family and make those hangout times on the patio even more entertaining!
